Why We Started Suncraft

Every app studio has an origin story, and most of them are tidier than the truth. Ours starts with a fairly ordinary feeling: opening an app we used every day and realising we did not actually like it very much.
It was fast enough. It worked. But it also interrupted us three times before we finished the one thing we opened it to do — a rating prompt, a notification permission ask we had already declined, and a full-screen offer for a subscription tier we did not want. None of that was built for us. All of it was built for a number on someone’s dashboard.
That is not a scandal. It is just the default. And once you notice the default, it is hard to stop noticing it.
The gap we kept seeing
The more we looked, the more we saw the same pattern in categories we cared about. The apps were rarely bad. They were crowded — with prompts, upsells, streaks, badges, and features that existed because a roadmap needed filling rather than because anyone asked.
Meanwhile the things that actually make software feel good got quietly deprioritised:
- Opening instantly, every time, on a phone that is three years old
- Doing the main thing in one tap instead of three
- Not asking for permissions it does not need
- Not treating your data as inventory
None of that is technically hard. It is just easy to trade away, one small decision at a time, when growth is the only thing being measured.
What we decided to do instead
Suncraft exists to make the trade in the other direction. Concretely, that means a few commitments we are willing to be held to:
We do not use dark patterns. No manufactured urgency, no confirm-shaming, no unsubscribe flow buried four screens deep. If you want to leave, we will make it easy and hope you come back.
We collect what the app needs to work, and nothing else. Not “nothing else for now.” Nothing else.
Speed is a feature we refuse to trade. If a screen takes a visible beat to appear, we treat it as a bug and fix it before we ship anything new on top of it.
We would rather ship one polished thing than five rushed ones. Craft is in the name. It would be embarrassing to treat it as decoration.
Every one of these costs us something measurable in the short term. That is precisely why most studios do not make them. We think they compound in the other direction over a long enough time horizon.
Independent, on purpose
Suncraft is self-funded, and we intend to stay that way.
That is not modesty, it is strategy. Outside money comes with a growth curve attached, and that curve is what pushes studios into the exact behaviours we just listed. A company that has to justify a valuation will eventually add the rating prompt. A company that has to cover its own costs and nothing more can afford to leave it out.
The trade-off is real: we move slower than a funded competitor, we work on one thing at a time, and we do not get to buy our way to an audience. We think that is a good deal. It means the only reason anyone will ever use a Suncraft app is that it is genuinely better for them than the alternative.
Why we are writing this down
Our first app is not out yet. We could have stayed quiet until it was, launched it, and hoped the values came through on their own.
We would rather do it the other way around. This blog is where we think out loud — the design decisions, the technical trade-offs, the roadmap, and the occasional mistake worth documenting. Partly because writing forces clarity. Mostly because we think you deserve to know what a company believes before you give it space on your home screen.
If any of this sounds like software you have been wanting, stick around. The next post covers how we decide what is actually worth building.
Frequently asked questions
What is Suncraft Apps?
Suncraft is an independent app development studio building mobile apps for iOS and Android. We are self-funded and focused on making a few apps well rather than many apps quickly.
Why was Suncraft founded?
We started Suncraft because too many apps are designed around engagement metrics rather than around the person using them. We wanted to build the other kind: fast, quiet, respectful of your attention, and pleasant to come back to.
Has Suncraft released any apps yet?
Not yet. Our first app is in active development. We are publishing our thinking as we build so that anyone following along knows what we stand for before the first release arrives.
