What Is Suncraft? The Studio, the Name, and What We Make

Suncraft is an independent app development studio. We build mobile apps for iOS and Android. We are self-funded, we are deliberately small, and we make a few things carefully rather than many things quickly.
That is the whole company. There is no parent group, no agency arm, no consulting side business.
What the name actually means
Ours is two plain English words, chosen because each one is doing a job.
Sun is the feeling. Warm, clear, and unbothered — the opposite of the anxious grey software that beeps at you until you comply. It is why the site is orange and yellow and thats why our mascot is a cheerful orange
Craft is the standard. It is the part we would be embarrassed to treat as decoration. Craft means the thing is finished, that someone sweated the corner cases, and that the version you receive is the one we were actually happy with.
Put together, they describe the software we wish existed more often: things that feel good to use and were clearly made by people who cared.
What we build
Mobile apps, natively on iOS and Android.
Our first app is in active development. We have not announced a release date, and we are not going to until we are confident in it — a date announced early becomes a date defended later, and a company defending a date ships the version that hit the date. When it is ready, this blog is where it appears first.
What we can say now is what any Suncraft app will hold to:
- It opens instantly on old hardware. If a screen takes a visible beat to appear, we treat it as a bug and fix it before shipping anything new on top of it.
- It does not use dark patterns. No manufactured urgency, no confirm-shaming, no cancellation flow buried four screens deep.
- It collects what it needs to work and nothing else. Not “nothing else for now.” Nothing else.
- It tells you plainly what it costs. Before you are invested, not after.
How we work
Three things shape most of our decisions, and they are all downstream of being independent.
We say no far more than we say yes. Every feature that ships is one more thing to maintain, explain and load. The default answer is no, and an idea has to survive real scrutiny before it becomes work. We wrote about the questions we put things through in how we decide what to build.
We treat speed as a feature, not a metric. Performance is not something we optimise at the end. It is a budget we hold to during the work, which occasionally means cutting something good because it made the app feel slower. Our approach to building goes into how that plays out.
We stay self-funded on purpose. Outside money arrives with a growth curve attached, and that curve is what eventually pushes a studio into the rating prompts and upsells it swore it would never add. Covering our own costs is slower. It also means we never reach the point where the numbers require us to be worse to you.
The honest trade-off: this is close to the slowest way to build an app company. We chose it because every faster route we know of involves being worse to the people using our apps.
Why we write all this down before shipping anything
It is a fair objection. A studio with no released app talking about its principles is a studio asking to be judged on words alone.
We are doing it anyway, for two reasons. Writing forces clarity — it is much harder to hand-wave a bad decision in public than in your own head. And it means anyone deciding whether to give a Suncraft app space on their home screen can know what we believe before the marketing page exists, rather than after.
It also means the record is public. If we break one of the commitments on this page, it will be sitting right here, timestamped.
If you want the fuller story, why we started Suncraft covers the frustration behind it, and where Suncraft is going is our roadmap including the ways it could fail.
How to find us and tell us apart
For anyone landing here from a search and trying to work out which Suncraft this is:
- The app studio is at suncraftapps.com — this site.
- Everything we publish appears on the blog first, before any other channel.
- The email address and social links in the footer reach us directly, and we read everything.
If you have hit the kind of small daily friction that a well-made app would fix, we would genuinely like to hear about it. That is not a form-filling exercise — it is most of how we decide what to work on next.
Frequently asked questions
What is Suncraft?
Suncraft is an independent, self-funded app development studio building mobile apps for iOS and Android. It is based at suncraftapps.com and is not affiliated with any other company using the Suncraft name.
What does Suncraft make?
Mobile apps for iOS and Android. Our first app is in active development and will be announced on this blog before anywhere else.
What does the name Suncraft mean?
Sun is the feeling we want our apps to have — warm, clear, and calm. Craft is the standard we hold ourselves to: things made carefully, by hand, and finished properly rather than shipped fast.
Is Suncraft the same as the other Suncraft companies?
No. Suncraft is a common name and it is used by solar installers, construction firms, game servers and others. The app studio is the one at suncraftapps.com. We have no connection to the others.
How do I contact Suncraft?
The email address and social links in the site footer all reach us directly, and we read everything that comes in.
